Memento mori has been an important part of ascetic disciplines as a means of perfecting the character, by cultivating detachment and other virtues, and turning the attention towards the immortality of the soul and the afterlife. In art, memento mori are artistic or symbolic reminders of mortality.
Carpe diem is usually translated “seize the day”. The expression “memento mori” (“remember that you are mortal”) carries some of the same connotation as “carpe diem”. Mindfulness of our own mortality is key in making us realize the importance of the moment. “Remember that you are mortal, so seize the day.” Design of decks is created by Moritz Schaaf.
